Second People's Peace Congress

The Vermont "People's Peace Congress"

Why a People's Peace Congress?

A People's Peace congress is a dedicated citizen's body that gathers for the exclusive purpose of contemplating, developing, and acting upon the intention to promote peace. When politicians and governments favor the use of aggression and military force to resolve international tensions and difficulties, the job of restoring and maintaining peace must necessarily fall to the people themselves.

These are insecure times, with widespread concerns about terrorism, war, and increasing threats of violence. The Vermont People's Peace Congress is being convened to draw upon the intelligence, ideas, resources and undrstanding that ordinary VT citizens can bring to the table to help promote peace.

The People's Congress will bring together a group of up to 100 peace delegates who wish to develop and act upon the premise that peaceful co-existence between people and nations is possible, even in the face of difficult circumstances.

What will the People's Peace Congress do?

The People's Peace Congress will be be "working Congress" that will focus on establishing a broad mandate for peace and developing specific responses to the current intention of the United States Government to attack the nation of Iraq. Proposed agenda items for the People's Congress include:

2nd People's Peace Congress

RE: Registration for the 2nd People's Peace Congress
WHEN: January 20, 2002 from 1-4 p.m.
WHERE: SIT Campus, Brattleboro, VT

Dear Peace Delegates,

This notice is being sent to all delegates who attended the first People's Peace Congress in November and also to those who expressed interest but were unable to attend. There are three brief items to bring to your attention regarding the upcoming session of the Peace Congress on January 20th:

1) REGISTRATION: Once again, peace delegates are asked to send advance notice regarding their plans to attend the Congress. If you're receiving this notice via email, you can simply hit the reply button, or you can RSVP by phone (802-387-4827) or via US mail (c/o Seeds of Peace, P.O. Box 858, Putney, VT 05346). We'd like to hear from you either way to confirm whether or not you will be able to attend.

2) OUTREACH/PUBLICITY: For New Year's, bring a friend to the Peace Congress! Currently, we have 120 peace delegates who are receiving this notice. If each person contacts a few other people about the Peace Congress, we might soon have 200 - 300 delegates serving in the Congress and working together for peace. To help circulate information about the Peace Congress, there is a newly revised flyer and registration form attached as a document (MS Word format) to this email. Feel free to print, copy, email and share this information with friends or post it around town. If you are unable to open the document and want a few flyers sent by US mail, just let me know.

3) YOUR INPUT: We're setting up a web site for the Congress which should be online by the first week of January at http://www.peoplespeacecongress.net Among other things, we'll have an interactive "work site" where people can offer input, start discussions and/or provide suggestions and ideas for the January 20th Peace Congress (thanks to peace delegate Christian Sinclair at Track3Connections for helping set this up!). Of course, if you want to talk things over with a real live person on the other end, call the Seeds of Peace office anytime at 802-387-4827.

Any other details, needs or questions, don't hesitate to be in touch. Hope to see you soon.

Jon
